Three-Day National Level Seminar on Structural Bioinformatics

A Three-Day National Level Seminar on Structural Bioinformatics was organized by the Department of Bioinformatics, from 18th to 20th August 2005 in Dr.G.R.Damodaran College of Science, Coimbatore. The participants for this National Seminar were from various Universities and Colleges across the country. They include PSG College of Arts and Science-Coimbatore, Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science for Women-Coimbatore, Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal College-Sivakasi, BioMedical Engineering Research Foundation (BMERF)-Salem, Sri Krishnadevaraya University¡VAndhra Pradesh, Avinashilingam Deemed University-Coimbatore, Sree Amman Arts and Science College-Erode, Bharathiar University-Coimbatore, Bharathidasan College of Arts and Science-Erode, Muthayammal College of Arts and Science-Rasipuram, AVVM Sri Pushpam College-Tanjore, Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research-Chennai, Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA)¡VTanjore, Kongunadu Arts and Science College-Coimbatore. Dr K Guruprasad, Scientist and Coordinator-Bioinformatics, CCMB, Hyderabad inaugurated the Three-Day Seminar. Prof A N Lakshmanan, Adviser and Dr K Palaniappan, Principal were also present. Dr K Guruprasad released the abstract of the Seminar and Prof A N Lakshmanan received the first copy of it. The inaugural talk was on Structural Bioinformatics by Dr K Guruprasad. That is, how to predict structure, Protein foldings and ƒÒ propeller. He gave a note on HIV Protease and it¡¦s protein folding. Dr K. Mani, Reader, Department of Plant Biotechnology, PSG CAS gave an introduction to Molecular Modeling and Dynamics. The first session of the second day of the Seminar started with Paper Presentation by the participants followed by a lecture on ¡§Alp+ Phenotype in E. coli¡¨ by Dr M Hussain Munavar, Reader and Head ¡V Department of Molecular Biology, School of Biological Sciences, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai. The lecture was followed by Paper Presentation and in all 14 papers were presented by the participants in the field of Bioinformatics. In the concluding day of the seminar Dr D Velmurugan, Department of Crystallography and Biophysics, University of Madras, Chennai gave a talk on Crystallization of Proteins and X-ray Crystallography. Following Dr D Velmurugan, Dr N Santhi from Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science for Women, Coimbatore gave a talk on Structural Bioinformatics in Drug Discovery. The host presentations were also given by the Staff and the Students of the Department of Bioinformatics of Dr G R Damodaran College of Science, Coimbatore. The seminar came to an end on 20-08-2005 with the Valedictory Session, where the chief guest Dr D Velmurugan, presented the certificates to the participants and gave away the First, Second and Third prizes for the best papers presented. The First Prize went to Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research, Chennai, the Second was won by Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science for Women, Coimbatore and the Third was shared by Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal College, Sivakasi and Dr G R Damodaran College of Science, Coimbatore. From this seminar, the students, lecturers and the research scholars gathered a handful of information in the field of Structural Bioinformatics and the guest speakers also mentioned the resources in this field can be utilized for mankind.
