About the Department
|
Under the School of Biotechnology, started in
1995, the 3 year BSc and 2 year MSc Programmes are
offered. The M.Phil. and
Ph.D. programmes were started in 2001-2002.
M.Sc. and PG Diploma in Bioinformatics are
offered by the Bioinformatics centre of the College with which the School of Biotechnology has close
association for student training, project work and research. Add on
courses leading to the Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma Programmes recognized by the University are also
offered at the UG and PG levels.

|

The School of
biotechnology has well equipped laboratories with facilities not only
to meet the needs of the Post graduate courses, but also to
facilitate advanced research in Plant Tissue Culture, Animal Tissue
Culture, Molecular Biology, Microbial Biotechnology, Immunology,
Downstream Processing, DNA finger printing, Recombinant DNA
technology etc. The School has sophisticated facilities including the
DNA sequencer, UV Spectrophotometer, Refrigerated Microcentrifuge,
High Speed Centrifuge, Ultrasonicator, PCR
Machine(eppendrof and MJ research), Elisa Reader, Electroblotter, Milli-Q-Filtration

The
4 semester (2 year) programme is designed
as a comprehensive mix of uptodate and advanced
study of relevant scientific principles and theory and exceptionally
strong laboratory work in the sate of art protocols and techniques by
a project of professional standard so as to develop innovative
capability of high order.

Apart
from the strong open ended practical focus of the course work,
seminars, guest lectures, field and industrial visits and other
interactions serve to highlight areas of current development and
practical applications. Students are helped to undertake summer
training in research labs, hospitals and industries.

computer and internet conversant, and to appreciate the potentials of
the Informatics – Bio-science interface.

About the Department
|
|
Under the Department of Biochemistry,
instituted in 1995-96, the 3 year B Sc and 2 year M Sc programmes are offered. The research programmes
M.Phil and Ph.D commenced from 2006 with the approval of Bharathiar
University. The Department endeavors' to give an orientation
towards molecular biology and related interfaces of Biochemistry with
modern Biotechnology and Genetics. The department is well equipped
with lab research facilities and the well qualified and motivated
faculty are keen to develop research, development, consultancy and
extension activities.

The Department is actively associated with
the Bioinformatics centre of the College which offers the 2 year M Sc
and the 1 year full time PG Diploma (University) in Bioinformatics as
well as 1 year part time Advanced Diploma (College).

The Department has well equipped
laboratories with facilities not only to meet the needs of the Post
graduate courses, but also to facilitate research in thrust areas
including Molecular Biology, Cellular Biochemistry, Immunology, Drug
Biochemistry, Microbial Biochemistry, Fermentation Technology and
Genetic Engineering. The Department has sophisticated facilities for
carrying out Molecular Analysis. A Central Instruments section with Ultrasonicator, PCR Machine, ELISA Reader, -800C
deep freezer, Minicycler TM, Autoclave,
Microscopes, Sequencer, Fermenter, Hybridisation chamber and a Gel Documentation
Unit, Bioreactor, Auto analyzer etc. supports research and project
work. The Department has well equipped state of the art facilities in
Plant Tissue Culture, Herbal Medicine etc.

Activities & Outreach
Active
interest is taken in the extension of scientific knowledge and techniques
to the community around and to the rural and weaker sections. So that
science based income generating ventures could be started by them. In
this endeavour, the members of the technology transfer projects
undertaken by the GRD Trust' s centre for research in social
sciences, technology and culture.(CRSTC). A member of faculty, Mrs.A.Malarvizhi is the co-investigator of DST
sponsored project."setting up a
resource centre for training and support in income generation venture
based on science and technology inputs for rural women of Nammakkal District" under the
"extension and technology transer".Scheme.

The B.Sc. Biochemistry programme

extensive laboratory work. Nano Bio Technology and Clinical database
management are offered as electives. The course spans four semesters
and comprises 13 theory subjects, 3 practical and a project in the
final semester.

the Department
|
|
The Department of Microbiology of Dr. G. R. Damodaran
College of Science, started in the year 1995-96, is offering the 3 year
B. Sc. Microbiology, 2 year M.Sc
Microbiology, M.Phil (Full – time and
Part – time) and Ph.D. (Full – time and Part – time) programmes. The backbone of the department is the
intellectual rigor provided by a strong team of faculty members and
students coming from all across the world. The department has a strong
base in Microbial technology and the main focus of the courses offered
is on Genetics, Molecular Biology, Industrial Microbiology, Immunology,
Medical Microbiology, Genetic Engineering, Environmental Microbiology,
Bioinformatics, Nanotechnology, Research Methodology and other areas
allied to biological sciences. Considerable number of research papers
is published every year in the journals of national and international
repute. The alumni of the Department of Microbiology, Dr. GRDCS occupy
positions of great responsibility in different institutions in India
and abroad. Many
of our students and have become researchers in the institutions of
eminence within India
and abroad. The faculty has been successful in mobilizing highly
competitive research and extension project grants from the national
funding agencies like DST, DBT, UGC, Ministry of Health and Family
Welfare, TNSCST etc. A large number of eminent scientists visit the
department every year and deliver lectures. Department of Microbiology
regularly organizes national level seminars, conferences and workshops
to update the students about the recent developments in the field of
Microbiology and related sciences.

fermentor, UV-
vis spectrophotometer, PCR thermocycler, ELISA Reader, Gel-doc system, BOD
chamber, cold centrifuge DNA sequencer, Untrasonicator,
