The School of Biotechnology is an active Department involved in teaching and research in frontier areas of modern biology. The objectives of the school are to conduct high quality basic research and training in frontier areas of Modern Biology, and promote facilities for new and modern techniques in the inter-disciplinary areas of Biology. Realizing Biotechnology as one of the greatest intellectual enterprises of human kind, the B.Sc and M.Sc Biotechnology Degree Courses were started in the year 1995 and 1999 respectively to provide the impetus that fulfills this potential of understanding life process and utilizing them to the advantage of humanity. Even as class room teaching, the well equipped laboratories have their share in the mode of instruction, personal interaction between students and teachers and among students themselves, that form an extremely important and lively medium of generation and transmission of knowledge. Attaining new heights in Biotechnology research, shaping Biotechnology into a premier precision tool need lot of infrastructure that GRD School of Biotechnology provides the students. Basic research is essential on all aspects of Modern Biology including development of the tools to identify, isolate, and manipulate the individual genes that govern the specific characters in plants, animals, and microorganisms. Considering the need for creating a separate framework to strength Biology and Biotechnology, research in the Department was started in the year 2001 and students are enrolled for M.Phil and Ph.D.

B.Sc Biotechnology

Biotechnology is the research-oriented science including a fusion of biology and technology. This programme encompasses a large variety of subjects including Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Animal Biotechnology and Plant Biotechnology. It is associated with other subjects such as Maths, Biostatistics, Cell Biology, Nanobiotechnology, IPR etc. Biotechnology features the use of living cells and bacteria in the industrial process. Biotechnology can be applied in developing various vaccines, medicines and diagnostics, improving energy production and conservation and increasing productivity.

Objectives of the B.Sc Biotechnology program

  • To impart basic knowledge and skills of various aspects of biotechnology
  • To train the students for industrial need and to pursue further education
  • To inculcate entrepreneurship among the students so as to start their own ventures in the field of Biotechnology

HSC, HSE (CBSE) or equivalent approved by the Bharathiar University having passed with one of the subjects as Biology/Botany/Zoology.

M.Sc Biotechnology

The Master's Degree in Biotechnology is the ideal programme for students who want to build a solid foundation of operational knowledge, techniques and methods in the area of biotechnology. It is aimed at holders of Bachelor's Degrees or equivalent Undergraduate Degrees and professionals in the areas of biotechnology, biomedicine, industry, pharmaceuticals, fisheries, food and the environment, as well as anyone with an interest in basic aspects of Biotechnology, such as its processes and products. It provides students with the training to access third-cycle studies in the area of Biotechnology or other doctoral programmes in related areas, or to obtain employment in the field of Biotechnology. This Master's Degree is closely related to other National and International Master's Degrees that are focused on applying the principles of Biotechnology in the following areas like food technology, bioprocess technology, agrobiotechnology, Microbial Biotechnology and animal cells, food biotechnology, Biotechnology of natural and pharmaceutical products, and Marine biotechnology.

Objectives of the M.Sc Biotechnology Program

  • To impart advanced knowledge and understanding of various aspects of Biotechnology.
  • To generate skilled manpower in different areas of biotechnology to serve the Biotechnology related industries and provide trained manpower.
  • To prepare the students for pursuing research in industry and institutions.
  • Students can design, write and present a specific topic and apply logical and critical thinking to Biotechnology or related projects. Demonstrate an ability to take the initiative in new challenges, and in coordination and leadership tasks.
  • Promotion of bioentrepreneurs in this part of the state.
